Respiratory Analytics reaches major US clinical milestone with aflo® asthma platform
NWCAM2 participant Respiratory Analytics has completed a pilot study at Boston Children’s Hospital as the company builds towards US market entry and further development of its digital respiratory technology.
Respiratory Analytics has marked another significant milestone in the development of its aflo® respiratory management platform, with the completion of a pilot study at Boston Children’s Hospital in the United States.
Founder and CEO Susan Kelly recently shared the company’s progress at the AIMS Summit at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, outlining a year that has included the Boston study, successful fundraising, further clinical research, patent development and plans for entry into the US market.
The Boston Children’s Hospital study evaluated aflo® in children and young people with asthma. The platform is designed to address a persistent challenge in respiratory care: incorrect inhaler technique, which can prevent patients from receiving the intended dose of their prescribed medication.
Rather than relying solely on periodic observation by a healthcare professional, aflo® combines connected technology and data analytics to assess inhaler use and provide quantitative information on factors such as inhalation strength, timing and technique. This creates the potential for more personalised training and for clinicians to gain a clearer picture of how patients are using their medication outside the clinic.
The completion of the US pilot represents an important step in the journey from technology development through clinical validation and towards international commercialisation.
For MedTech companies, this journey can be every bit as challenging as the initial development of the technology itself. Clinical evidence, regulatory requirements, intellectual property, manufacturing readiness, funding and market entry must all develop alongside the product if an innovation is to progress successfully towards widespread adoption.
Respiratory Analytics is currently participating in the North West Centre for Advanced Manufacturing 2 (NWCAM2) programme, which connects eligible Health & Life Sciences SMEs with specialist technical and research capability across its partner network.
The company’s progress provides a strong example of the ambition within the regional MedTech ecosystem and of how locally developed health technologies can progress towards validation and adoption in major international healthcare markets.
