Digital mould development brings virtual validation into medical technology manufacturing

can reduce risk and improve the development of medical technology components.

Medical technology manufacturers are under constant pressure to improve product quality, shorten development cycles and maintain reliable, traceable production processes. A new approach from Gerresheimer provides a useful example of how digital engineering can help address these challenges before physical tooling is built.

The company has introduced “Digital Mold”, an end-to-end, data-driven process for developing, optimising and operating injection moulds used in medical technology. The approach links a digital twin of the mould with production data, allowing engineers to test mould and process parameters virtually before committing to physical construction. This matters because tooling decisions made early in development can have a significant effect
on product quality, cycle times, material use and the cost of later changes. Virtual optimisation gives development teams more opportunity to identify potential issues, compare design options and understand how a mould is likely to perform under production conditions.

The process also extends beyond initial development. Gerresheimer describes mould lifecycle management as a foundation for ongoing data analysis and future artificial intelligence applications. In practical terms, this creates a more continuous link between design, tooling, process performance and maintenance rather than treating each stage as a separate activity.

For SMEs, the wider lesson is not that every manufacturer needs to build a complex digital twin system immediately. It is that virtual validation, structured production data and closer integration between product design and manufacturing engineering can reduce uncertainty before capital is
committed. This is particularly relevant in medical technology, where changes to tooling or process conditions may require additional validation and documentation. Testing assumptions earlier can therefore support both operational efficiency and a more controlled route towards production.
